Research- Analysing Film Posters

GONE GIRL

The top line at the top of the poster shows the audience
other films the producers of gone girl has also produced,
this helps to generate a bigger target audience as more
people will be interested if they like the previous films.

The tag line on the gone girl poster says 'You don't know what you've got until its...' this quote helps add a sense of mystery to the poster and it connotes the genre of physiological thriller due the the suspense and tension. It also makes the reader very intrigued to know what is going to happen next.

The title is black and there is clouds covering it slightly, this is very conventional of a physiological thriller due to the mystery that it portrayed from the poster. Although the use of black for the title is a counter type of the physiological thriller as they are usually red. This is because red usually connotes death and evil, however gone girl doesn't include any red making it more mysterious.

The date of the film is included at the bottom, central to the poster in a bold black font. This makes it easily identified to the audience letting them know when the film is released. This is stereotypical of most film posters
to make key information like this in bold to help it stand
out more easily.

The main image is quite small at the bottom of the film
poster and is faded out quite a lot so it doesn't stand out
as much. However this is effective due to the title being
'gone girl' so the title is nearly gone and it adds effect and
mystery.

SPLIT

The Background has a split effect which helps to represent the title of 'Split'. It also helps connote the genre of physiological thriller as in the film he has split personalities and the crack in the background represents his personality.

The colours in the poster are only black and white. This connotes simplicity and blandness which is a convention of the physiological thriller genre as it helps the audience understand the characters personality better.

The main image is a close up of the main character. He is shown to be looking very serious and intriguing. He is shaded very black which connotes darkness and danger this is stereotypical for a physiological thriller. The image is also very large taking up half of the poster which connotes he is the main character and is important in the film. This is a convention of all film posters as the main image is always large as it helps to attract a wider target audience.

The fonts of the mast head 'SPLIT' used on the poster is jagged
and slightly misplaced this helps the audience to discover that
the main character has a mental disorder as he is misplaced and
confused which is stereotypical for a physiological thriller as
most of the characters have severe mental disorders.

The release date is in bold, this helps attract a larger target audience
due to it being in bold and at the bottom of the poster. This will help
people to identify when the film will be released so more people
will go and watch the film in the cinema. It is stereotypical for film
posters to have the release date in bold due to it standing out more
and standing out to the audience.

The tagline is at the top of the poster and this is always where it
is placed on film posters due to it relating to the main image and
giving you an insight onto what the film is about and the plot. On
the split poster the tagline is 'Kevin has 23 distinct personalities'
this tells you that Kevin has a mental disorder which will clearly
help people to identify the genre of physiological thriller.

PERFECT STRANGER

The colours used in physiological thrillers are stereotypically red, black and white. Red and black
are closely linked to the genre of horror. They connote danger, violence, blood, evil and mystery.

Low key lighting is often used on the main images to emphasis the mystery and evil within the film. As well as the background being dark and emphasizing danger. It also helps to create and unsettling atmosphere which ultimately builds tension for the film.

The layout of physiological film posters are usually where the title is at the bottom of the page this is to make the main image stand out more. The colour of the title is red which helps it to stand out from the rest of the poster and make the title more well known to the audience making more people want to go and watch it.

The fonts used within physiological thriller posters are usually condensed, clean and thin which help people to be able to clearly read them and remember what they are
called. It also helps to make them look more professional
and helps to connote the genre as it is a stereotypical for
physiological thrillers.

Linking back to my research to help create my own trailers film poster I analysed and researched these trailers which has allowed me to identify the main conventions for physcological film posters which I took inspiration from when I am creating my own. I have decided I will use dark colours with a pop of red so it can easily be identified as a psycological thriller as these colours connote the genre
